Camping can be a great way to get away from your hectic life and let go of stress. But you need to make sure you are prepared for the trip. This includes being ready for the worst to happen. When you are camping, you may not always have quick access to clean water. By learning proper water purification, you can ensure that hydration & filtration will never be an issue. #1 – Boiling Water

One of the oldest methods of purifying water is also one of the most effective. Using a pot, over a fire, bring your water to a rapid boil. If the pot that you are using is old or has not been used for purifying water before, you may want to throw out the first batch and then fill it back up again. Boil your water for at least 1 minute.

#2 – Use Iodine

Using iodine is another way to purify water. Iodine will help kill bacteria and purify your water. You can either use iodine tablets or liquid iodine. When using liquid iodine, like the bottles sometimes found in first aid kits, use about 30 drops per gallon of water. Let the iodine work its magic for at least 30 minutes before you drink the water.

#3 – Use Bleach

Bleach is another method that works similar to iodine. When using bleach, only add about 15 drops of bleach per gallon of water. As with the iodine, let the water sit for 30 minutes before you drink it. With either the iodine or bleach method, use two separate containers, and pour the water back and forth between the two, to help circulate the water and allow the water to be properly oxygenated.

#4 – Water Distillation

The condensation that comes from a pot of boiling water should be completely sterile and safe to drink. If you do not feel that your pot of boiling water is clean enough, collect the steam from the boiling water. Allow the water to cool and you will have clean drinking water.

#5 – Use a Water Purifier

There are many water purifier kits that you can purchase from stores and websites that sell camping or hiking gear. These purifiers can cost anywhere from a few dollars to around a hundred dollars, depending on the size and the function. Some purifiers use UV light to kill bacteria, while others provide a complete purification process.

#6 – Strain Your Water

No matter which method you use, you may not find enough water to easily fill a container. If you take water from a murky area, and wish to remove debris, strain your water before purifying it. The easiest way to strain water and remove debris is to use two separate containers and a piece of cloth.

Wrap the cloth around the container that is holding the water. Hold the container upside down and allow the water to pass through the cloth and into the second container. If you do not have a spare piece of cloth, you can use a shirt or a clean sock.

#7 – Avoid Standing Water

If possible, avoid collecting water from a pool of stagnant water, such as a pond. Standing water is likely to have more bacteria and mold than any other source of water. Even if you use proper purification methods, you may not kill all the bacteria. If you have the choice between running water or a lake and a pond, always skip the pond. The less bacteria that needs to be killed, the safer you are going to be.
